Killabakh
'Day in the Country'
Welcome to Killabakh's 'Day in the Country'
The heart of Killabakh's community is its heritage hall. It is here the valley comes alive with the annual 'Day in the Country'.
Killabakh is in the hinterland of the Manning Valley, on the NSW Mid North Coast, and just a 4 hour drive north of Sydney. Set against the backdrop of Mt Goonook and the Comboyne Plateau this outstanding event helps raise funds to look after the hall and its beautiful surrounds.
'Day in the Country' had modest beginnings in 1987 as a 'Gala Art Show'. It was presented as a great opportunity for the public to view paintings by our very own and greatly admired David Perks and other popular Manning artists. Clearly it appealed to the public who flocked to Killabakh to enjoy not only the art but also a display of quality craft and other attractions. The Killabakh Tea Rooms also did a roaring trade and $1500 was raised on the day.
Our community realised it had hit upon a winning way of raising funds essential for the ongoing maintenance costs for our hall and other facilities. A similar format was adopted in the following year. As the publicity poster from that year depicts, it was already evolving into something more than solely an art show. After considerable discussion, the name was changed to 'Day in the Country'. All funds raised by the scores of community volunteers will be used to maintain, enhance and administer the facilities for the use of not only residents but also members of the wider community.
Entry is by gold coin donation. Visitors are provided with the day's program of entertainment and a list of activities, artists, artisans and producers. Everyone is automatically in the draw to win the Wheelbarrow Raffle, chock-full of goodies donated by community members and local businesses.
This is a wonderful opportunity for meeting up with old friends and making new ones.
So why not load up the car with family members and friends, head out to Killabakh and enjoy our hospitality.
A day of food, friends, entertainment and that great country feel. We are just 16 kilometres north of Wingham. The route will be well sign-posted.
